The Chicago White Sox headed into
Cleveland, Ohio Monday to start off a three game series against central
division rival the Cleveland Indians. Taking the mound for the White Sox was 23 year-old south paw Chris Sale who was making his first career start after being part of the teams bullpen the last two seasons.
In the top of the first inning the White Sox offense got to an early start when lead off batter Alejandro De Aza hit a solo shot off of Indians starter Josh Tomlin. Four batters later veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run homer putting the Sox out to an early 3-0 lead. After the early fireworks by the Sox offense Sale would all but shut down the Indians' batters. Sale would take a one hit shutout into the sixth inning but Cleveland would finally get on the board when Carlos Santana hit an RBI single to right. Sale's night would end in the seventh inning with an impressive 6 2/3 innings pitched while giving up only one run. Sale, who threw 100 pitches, more then doubled his previous pitch mark in any of his 79 relief appearances.
White Sox rookie Hector Santiago would come in for the save in the bottom of the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead. Santiago would give up a lead off home run to Jose Lopez that he drove off the left field foul pole. Santiago would settle down after and he would retire the next three batters, two by strikeout, to give the Sox a 4-2 win and his second save of the season.
