April 11
The Chicago Cubs fall to 1-5 on the season after they gave up the lead late for the third time in six games. The Milwaukee Brewers came one step closer to the series sweep of the Cubs at Wrigley Field with a 2-1 win Wednesday afternoon.
Cubs ace Ryan Dempster took to the mound for the second time this season looking for his first win. Dempster pitched well in his first outing against the Washington Nationals but the Cubs bullpen couldn't hold on to the lead. Just like his first outing Dempster had a very commanding performance going in this one taking a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead. Stepping into the batters box to lead off the seventh inning for Milwaukee was Mat Gamel, the man who is filling the void left by Prince Fielder who left for Detroit in the off season. Gamel would dig in and get a lead off double bringing George Kottaras to the plate. Kottaras would step in and hit what eventually would be the game winning home run over the right field wall giving the Brew Crew a 2-1 lead. The Brewers would then put the last two innings into the dominate arms of Francisco Rodriguez and John Axford. Rodriguez stuck out the side around a pair of walks in the eight inning and Axford would give up a hit before striking out the side in the ninth inning to record his second save of the season.
Starlin Castro hit a sacrifice fly in the first to drive in David DeJesus for the Cubs only run of the game. Brewers' starter Yovani Gallardo gave up only five hits and one earned run in seven innings. He also struck out six and walked two batters.
