Pacers Hold On For OT Win In Cleveland

April 11

Danny Granger's 23 points helped the Pacers fend off the Cleveland Cavaliers 104-98 in over time Wednesday night. The win improved the Pacers's record to 36-22 on the season and they have won six of their last seven games.
George Hill who was making his second straight start for the injured Darren Collison had a chance to put the game out of reach at the end of regulation when he was sent to the free throw line twice, but he left the door open for the Cavs by missing three of the four shots. Lester Hudson of the Cavs would take full advantage as he floated a last second shot over David West that tied the game at 94 with 1.2 seconds left. Roy Hibbert who had a double-double with eleven points and eleven rebounds almost made a circus shot at the buzzer but it was off the rim. The Pacers completely dominated in the five minute OT outscoring the Cavs 10-4. George Hill avenged his own mishap at the end of the fourth quarter when he hit a three pointer late in OT that would serve as a "Kill Shot" to the Cavs.
On a very odd side note during the game's introduction David West of the Pacers got into a mock fight with the Cavs mascot Moondog. In the altercation West accidentally hit and injured the suit wearer's eye. The injury was bad enough that he was sent to the hospital but everything checked out fine. David West was quoted as saying he felt terrible about it and hoped that the guy was okay.

Cubs Lose Another Late

April 11

The Chicago Cubs fall to 1-5 on the season after they gave up the lead late for the third time in six games. The Milwaukee Brewers came one step closer to the series sweep of the Cubs at Wrigley Field with a 2-1 win Wednesday afternoon.
Cubs ace Ryan Dempster took to the mound for the second time this season looking for his first win. Dempster pitched well in his first outing against the Washington Nationals but the Cubs bullpen couldn't hold on to the lead. Just like his first outing Dempster had a very commanding performance going in this one taking a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead. Stepping into the batters box to lead off the seventh inning for Milwaukee was Mat Gamel, the man who is filling the void left by Prince Fielder who left for Detroit in the off season. Gamel would dig in and get a lead off double bringing George Kottaras to the plate. Kottaras would step in and hit what eventually would be the game winning home run over the right field wall giving the Brew Crew a 2-1 lead. The Brewers would then put the last two innings into the dominate arms of Francisco Rodriguez and John Axford. Rodriguez stuck out the side around a pair of walks in the eight inning and Axford would give up a hit before striking out the side in the ninth inning to record his second save of the season.

Starlin Castro hit a sacrifice fly in the first to drive in David DeJesus for the Cubs only run of the game. Brewers' starter Yovani Gallardo gave up only five hits and one earned run in seven innings. He also struck out six and walked two batters.

Sox Win Battle of the Long Ball 10-6

April 11

The Chicago White Sox would come out on top for the second time in three days Wednesday afternoon beating the Cleveland Indians 10-6. The day off due to the rain postponing Tuesday night's game didn't seem to effect the White Sox batters. They put up ten runs off of eleven hits including a solo shot by Alejandro De Aza and a three run blast by A.J. Pierzynski who both went yard in Monday night's game.

The White Sox would take an early 4-1 lead in the first inning off of Indians' starter Justin Masterson. Adam Dunn would score the third run of the inning off a wild pitch by Masterson. After the first inning the Indians would finally battle back against Sox starter John Danks after Travis Hafner's two run double made it 5-4 in the fifth inning. Then in the sixth inning the Sox would double their run total when De Aza homered off Dan Wheeler and Pierzynski ripped a three run shot off of Rafael Perez increasing the lead to 10-4. Shelly Duncan would hit a two run shot off of Sox reliever Will Ohman in the Seventh but were unable to produce anymore runs. The Sox would come out on top 10-6 and 2-0 in a series that saw seven total home runs between the two clubs. White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko would also surpass Hall of Famer Luke Appling for second place in Sox history with 3,531 total bases.

John Danks got his first W on the season helping the Sox improve to 3-2 on the season. The White Sox will make their home opener on Friday in Chicago when the host division rival the Detroit Tigers.

White Sox Take Game One In Cleveland

April 9

The Chicago White Sox headed into Cleveland, Ohio Monday to start off a three game series against central division rival the Cleveland Indians. Taking the mound for the White Sox was 23 year-old south paw Chris Sale who was making his first career start after being part of the teams bullpen the last two seasons.

In the top of the first inning the White Sox offense got to an early start when lead off batter  Alejandro De Aza hit a solo shot off of Indians starter Josh Tomlin. Four batters later veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run homer putting the Sox out to an early 3-0 lead. After the early fireworks by the Sox offense Sale would all but shut down the Indians' batters. Sale would take a one hit shutout into the sixth inning but Cleveland would finally get on the board when Carlos Santana hit an RBI single to right. Sale's night would end in the seventh inning with an impressive 6 2/3 innings pitched while giving up only one run. Sale, who threw 100 pitches, more then doubled his previous pitch mark in any of his 79 relief appearances.

White Sox rookie Hector Santiago would come in for the save in the bottom of the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead. Santiago would give up a lead off home run to Jose Lopez that he drove off the left field foul pole. Santiago would settle down after and he would retire the next three batters, two by strikeout, to give the Sox a 4-2 win and his second save of the season.

Hoosier Shines In First Start For Pacers

April 9

Indianapolis native George Hill took full advantage of his first career start with the Indiana Pacers Monday night leading the team to its fourth win in five games. George Hill who is in his third NBA season out of IUPUI was traded this off season from the San Antonio Spurs to the Indiana Pacers for the draft rights to Kawhi Leonard.

With Darren Collison out due to a groin injury Hill was plugged into the starting lineup Monday night as the Pacers were hosting the Toronto Raptors. Hill would take full advantage of this opportunity as he would lead the team in scoring, rebounds, and assists as the Pacers would hold on to win 103-98. Hill finished the game with 18 points, shooting a perfect seven of seven from the free throw line and had 7 rebounds with four assists.

The Pacers would take a 14 point lead into halftime and a 15 point lead heading into the fourth quarter but the Raptors kept fighting back. The Raptors would just fall short of the comeback riding Linas Kleiza's 18 point fourth quarter. Danny Granger and Paul George also put up big points for the Pacers scoring 18 and 15 respectively.

Leandro Barbosa who was traded to the Pacers from the Raptors on March 15 put up 14 points in the second half against his former team.

Near Complete Game by Former ND Football Star

April 8, 2012

Sunday afternoon former University of Notre Dame football star Jeff Samardzija took the mound at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. Samardzija who is third in the Chicago Cubs Rotation, was making his first start of the year and only the sixth start of his career and his first in nearly two years.

Samardzija went into Easter Sunday with the tough task of preventing the Washington Nationals from completing a 3 game sweep of the Cubs. He would start the game off by giving up a lead off double to Nationals' short stop Ian Desmond but then Samardzija would follow by retiring the next 15 batters in a row with the help of some excellent defensive plays. Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos would break the streak by leading off the sixth inning with only the team's second hit of the game. Three hitters later Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa would end Samardzija's shutout bid with a sacrifice fly that would score Ramos making the score 1-1. Samardzija would take a 3 hitter into the ninth inning with the Cubs leading 4-1. With two outs Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman hit a ground ball to Cubs short stop Starlin Castro who rushed the throw to first base resulting in an error that would extend the inning. The Nationals next hitter Adam LaRoche would drive a ball over the right field wall bringing the Nationals within one and ending Samardzija's excellent outing at 8.2 innings. Cubs closer Carlos Marmol would record his first save of the season two hitters later giving the Cubs a 4-3 win over the Nationals. Samardzija finished the game with 8 Ks and a 1.04 ERA.

Jeff Samardzija, the Valparaiso, Indiana native, was a two sport athlete at the University of Notre Dame playing both football and baseball said that making the Chicago Cubs starting rotation this season was the highlight of his sports career. In 2006 Samardzija finished his senior football season at Notre Dame recording 78 catches for 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns. In his time at Notre Dame he set two single-season records in both receiving yards and touchdown receptions and was a two time Fred Biletnikoff Award finalist in 2005 and 2006.
